Filitosa 8000 years of History

The Mecca of the prehistoric Corsica and his museum
Tel : 04 95 74 00 91

The Discovery of Filitosa
The prospections that carried out in 1839 by Prosper
Mérimée, Inspector of Historic Monuments, revealed to
evrybody the material proof of a very ancient culture lying
in Corsica.

Mérimée describes the most beautiful dolmen of Taravo
(Sollacaro), but failed to notice anything at Filitosa !
Other noted archeologists, Messers A. de Mortilled and
Michau, researching the same region noticed nothing
either.

In 1946, the owner of the site, Mr Charles-Antoine Cesari,
discovered for the first time several statue-menhirs lying at
the foot of the Filitosa Mound. He also uncovered on the
spur the remains of some very ancient buildings.
Mr Lamotte, then Chief Archivist of Corsica, certified in the
field the importance of the discovery.

Mr Roger Grosjean, archeologist with the C. N. R. S
(National Centre for Scientific Research) on mission in
Corsica, understood a systematic dig at Filitosa with the
agreement and constant help of Mr Cesari. Since then the
site has been preserved and maintained by the Cesari
family.

We invit you to visit that Mecca of the prehistoric Corsica.
You will find on the spot a fast-food service and
accomodations (studios).

Do not miss to visit our workshop and the centre of craf
industry who offer all the diversity of the "Coraillerie's"
production, and also reproductions of prehistoric island
ceramics realised under the control of archeologists.
